A January stay in Potsdam is a popular option among students of German. In consultation with the German program at Augustana, students design their own independent study projects based on academic interests. Past participants completed projects in athletic training, architecture, biology, business, history, journalism, nursing, theater, and religion. This program is extremely affordable due to the support of the sister-cities organizations in Sioux Falls and Potsdam that organize host family stays in order to offer complete language immersion. The average total cost for this experience in January 2017 was $1,400, including round-trip-flight, overnight stays, meals, excursions, and spending money. The language requirement for January in Potsdam is a minimum of 3 semesters of college German. The same opportunity is available for the month of June.

An exchange program between Augustana University and the University of Potsdam enables Augustana students to spend a full academic year or spring semester at the University of Potsdam. The minimum German language requirement for this opportunity is 4 semesters of college German.
