Hands-On Learning

Augustana student playing in the Orchestra

Music majors (with the exception of piano or organ majors) are required to participate in a large ensemble every semester they reside on campus. Piano and organ majors participate in accompanying and solo performance opportunities in recitals and concerts.

Large Ensembles include:

Chamber Ensembles include:

  • Brass Choir
  • Augustana Chamber Choir
  • Northlanders Jazz Band
  • Jazz Lab
  • Jazz Combo
  • Opera Theatre Workshop
  • Pep Band
  • Clarinet Choir
  • Trombone Choir
  • Percussion Ensemble
  • Flute Choir
  • String Quartet
  • String Chamber Ensemble
  • Saxophone Quartet
  • Horn Choir

These ensembles give students an opportunity to hone their individual skills. Some chamber groups tour and attend festivals, and all perform regularly throughout the year.

Competitions

A number of Augustana students attend regional, state and national competitions and conferences each year. They are encouraged to audition and perform in the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra Chorus, and the Sioux Falls Municipal Band. These groups give students valuable professional performing experience and also provide remuneration.

An enormous benefit of being in Sioux Falls is the generous availability of national and international guest artists performing with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, the Community Concert Association, and the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society. Many take the time to perform with Augustana music students and offer them master classes and workshops.
