Highlights, Special Features and Opportunities
The Deaf Awareness organization promotes awareness of deafness on campus and in the community by introducing people to deafness and Deaf culture through social activities and community service.
Burst of Sign:
Augustana Deaf Awareness presents “Burst of Sign" a movie and Broadway-themed show featuring songs, skits, jokes, and stories in sign language. The entire show is interpreted so everyone can enjoy it, regardless of signing ability. The event is held every April at Kresge Recital Hall.
ASL Open House:
Once a month, typically the third Thursday evening, the ASL programs at Augustana host an ASL Open house in which we invite the local Deaf and interpreting community to our ASL Lab for fellowship, food, and games. This is a terrific way for our students to interact with community members and practice their ASL skills.

Midwest Conference on Deaf Education:
Every two years, Augustana hosts the Midwest Conference on Deaf Education to provide professional development opportunities to individuals who work with Deaf and hard-of-hearing youth, birth to 21. The collaboration of various stakeholders in the field at this conference allows for the sharing of expertise and information regarding current best practices in Deaf education with one another and with parents.
