Tours
The Augustana Band typically has toured during the January Interim break, and beginning with the 2002-2003 academic year, has made it a practice to travel overseas during the January term (thereby earning academic credit) once every four years. Their previous tours included China in 2003 and 2007. In January 2011, the Band traveled to Egypt and were in the country for the first few days of the Egyptian revolution. You may follow their blog to read about their experiences. The group has recently announced that it is scheduled to return to China in January, 2015.
The Augustana Choir has historically toured each January. Beginning in the 2012-13 academic year, the Choir begins a new tradition of traveling overseas during the January term once every four years.
Led by the Choir’s new conductor, Dr. Paul Nesheim, as well as by Dr. Michael Nitz (communications), Dr. Scott Johnson (Chair of the Department of Music) and Brad Heegel ‘76 (tour coordinator), the Choir took a 3.0 ch course in Communications while performing in some of the most beautiful settings in the world. The tour departed on Sunday, Jan. 13, and returned Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013. It included stops in Berlin, Germany; Potsdam, Germany; Leipzig, Germany; Prague, Czech Republic; Krakow, Poland; Vienna, Austria; Bratislava, Slovakia; Salzburg, Austria; and Munich, Germany. The Augustana Orchestra embarked upon their first regional tour in January 2012. In 2013, the group was invited to perform at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis as part of it's Missa Choralis program. As a relatively new but rapidly growing ensemble, the Orchestra will be doing more tour and outreach performances in the coming years.
The College/Community Band also travels internationally, including a tour to Europe in both 2006 and 2008. This group toured the British Isles for twelve days in June of 2012 and will be found in the France and Italy in 2014.
