Dr. Barry Eichler is trained in inorganic chemistry. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Minnesota-Morris and his Ph.D. in inorganic (organometallic) chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has completed post-doctoral work at the University of California-Davis and held faculty positions at Minnesota State University-Moorhead and Northwest Missouri State University before joining the faculty at Augustana University in 2008. He was the Frederick C. Kohlmeyer Distinguished Teaching Professor at Augustana University from 2016 to 2018. With a focus on materials science, Dr. Eichler is using fluorescent quantum dots and nucleotide aptamers in the early detection of cancer. He is currently working on a project that allows the creation of fluorescent probes to detect prostate and pancreatic cancers that involves bioconjugation, cell culture, confocal microscopy, and immunohistochemistry.

Cyndey joined Augustana as a visiting Analytical Chemistry Instructor in the Spring of 2016. She has since taught general chemistry labs and is now the Chemistry Department's tenure-track Analytical Chemist. Cyndey received her Ph. D. from South Dakota State University in Environmental Analytical Chemistry for her research into the architecture of Natural Organic Matter in the soil as it relates to carbon sequestration.

Dr. Andrew Klose arrived at Augustana in the fall of 2015 after a two-year appointment as a National Research Council Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Time and Frequency Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder, Colorado. He received his bachelor’s degree with majors in chemistry and mathematics from the University of Jamestown (ND), and earned his Ph.D. in nuclear chemistry from Michigan State University. The Klose Group research program is funded by the National Science Foundation and focuses on precision laser spectroscopic measurements of rare isotopes in collaboration with researchers at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams

Dr. Duffy-Matzner is an organic methodologist by training. She also has experience in industrial polymers and forensic science. She is active in the field of chemical education and has served as an editor for several chemistry publications. She received her Bachelor of Science at Boise State University and her Ph.D. at U.C. Davis. Her research centers on the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds with interesting biological or material science applications; particularly in the fields of drug design, solar cells and environmental chemistry. Dr. Duffy-Matzner is a recipient of the Vernon and Mildred Niebuhr Faculty Excellence Award for Teaching.

Dr. Jared R. Mays joined the Augustana faculty in 2009 and is the department’s biochemist. He received his Bachelor of Science with majors in chemistry and biochemistry from Gustavus Adolphus College, his Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Wisconsin, and completed postdoctoral work in medicinal chemistry at the University of Kansas. As a synthetic medicinal chemist, he has established a multidisciplinary research program at Augustana which bridges the boundaries between chemistry and biology and is focused on the medicinal chemistry of glucosinolates and isothiocyanates, anticancer natural products found in broccoli.

Dr. Charlie Weiss’s interests span the areas of organic and inorganic chemistry, along with scientific computing. He received his bachelor's degree from Carleton College, his Ph.D. from Northwestern University, and completed his postdoctoral work in the electrocatalysis group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. His research has historically centered around the development of organometallic complexes and catalysts for organic reactions but has more recently moved into digital data analysis and visualization using Python and the SciPy stack.

Dr. Larson teaches Introductory Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Cell Biology. His research focuses on platelets, platelet function, and platelet biogenesis. He is also the pre-professional advisor for medical lab science. He received his bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry at Concordia College and his Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Centre for Cardiovascular Research at the University of Birmingham (U.K.).

With a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from South Dakota State University, Laura began her career working 10 years as an environmental chemist. Before joining Augustana, she gained industry experience as a Lab Manager at an ethanol facility that was retrofitted to an isobutanol production plant.

Dr. Duane Weisshaar came to Augustana in 1984 with a Master's from University of Kansas, a Ph.D. from North Dakota State University in Analytical Chemistry, and two years of postdoctoral experience in electrochemistry at The Ohio State University. After 34 years of full-time teaching, he moved to a half-time staff position as the Chemistry Instrument and Computer Technician, with duties that include: care and maintenance of the Department’s instruments and computers, instrument training and teaching Instrument Proficiency courses. Dr. Weisshaar held the Orin M. Lofthus Distinguished Professorship from 2016-2019.
