SIOUX FALLS - The Augustana Northlanders Jazz Band will perform as part of the 2009 Augustana College Jazz on the Upper Great Plains Festival.

The 19-member jazz ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Paul Schilf, will perform as part of the festival, now in its 35th year. This year’s featured artists include Selmer saxophone recording artist, Mr. Chris Vadala*; Yamaha trumpet recording artist ,Allen Vizzutti; and Selmer trombone recording artist, Audrey Morrison.

The two-day festival, March 2-3, features more than 55 high school and middle school bands. These bands will perform Monday afternoon and throughout the day on Tuesday. The bands are adjudicated and provided workshops by the guest artists, Dr. Schilf, and other Augustana faculty. This is the eighth year the festival has been under the direction of Dr. Schilf.

The Northlanders Jazz Band was started in 1954 with Earl Colgan as its first student director. It continued as a student-run organization until Dr. Harold Krueger assumed its leadership in 1965.

The festival was started in 1974 under Dr. Krueger’s leadership. Since then, the Jazz Band has performed for many campus, community and regional events. During the past six years, Dr. Schilf and the Northlanders Jazz Band have commissioned seven big band jazz charts. This new jazz music is available through Sierra Publications, Doug Beach Music, and Kendor Music.
