Nordland Fest at Augustana College
SIOUX FALLS – “Tru Tick ‘n’ Tin” is the theme for Nordland Fest 2009 to be held the weekend of June 20 on the campus of Augustana College.
The event’s opening concert features H&V Melodies, a popular group at the Hostfest, who also performed at the Western Norway Immigration Festival in 2007. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 19, at Kresge Recital Hall in the Humanities Building. Winners of the Nordland Fest Music Contest will also perform. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students.
Family Heritage Day is Saturday, June 20, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Activities begin with a Children’s Parade from the Elmen Center to Heritage Park. The Elmen Center will also host Scandinavian crafts and art for sale, heritage exhibits, genealogy assistance, entertainment, and the Kaffe Stua serving Scandinavian food and more.
Heritage Park will be the scene of tours of the historic buildings, crafts and games for children, a program and food under the big tent, a lutefisk eating contest at noon, Norskie and junior games, and an inflatable slide.
“A Scandinavian Evening” begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Elmen Center. The traditional smorgasbord will be followed by the music of Skalmusik, a group that has toured Sweden and Norway, performed for the Hostfest, Prairie Home Companion, and the King and Queen of Sweden. Tickets are $20 for adults, $9 for children 12-and-under.
A church service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 21, at the Beaver Creek Church in Heritage Park. The Nordland Heritage Foundation brunch and program begins at noon in the Morrison Commons. Tickets are $8 and reservations are required.
