Augustana Writing Center Celebrates 25th Anniversary
The Writing Center, Augustana’s internationally certified tutoring program, will celebrate its 25th anniversary during an open house at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5. The Center is located in Humanities 220.
Since its debut in 1986, the Writing Center has provided nearly 10,000 free, walk-in tutoring sessions for full- and part-time Augustana students. The milestones are thanks largely to the student tutors who work at the Center, said Director Nancy Dickinson.
“Working with a tutor from the Writing Center gives a student the chance to work with a peer,” Dickinson said. “A student is able to get suggestions and comments from someone who’s detached from the assignment – from someone without the ‘power of the grade.’ That’s comforting for students.”
The Center is certified through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and is staffed with student tutors Sunday through Thursday during the day and evening. Tutoring sessions generally last 10-30 minutes.
Writing Center tutors are trained to talk through writing assignments with student clients to make certain the student understands what’s required. Tutors also help student clients think through and develop ideas; suggest organizational ideas; and offer strategies to help students edit and proofread effectively.
“At the Writing Center, our tutors don’t give students the answers. Instead, we wait patiently for the students to discover the answers on their own. It’s an incredible experience of which to be part,” Dickinson said.
