March 22: Orchestra Concert
The Augustana Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Christopher Stanichar, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 22, at the O'Gorman High School Lorang Theatre, located at 3201 S. Kiwanis Ave.
The concert will feature performances by Augustana winners of the 2013 Concerto-Aria Competition:
- Senior Maren Engel (soprano), a native of Owasso, Okla., and a student of Dr. Lisa Grevlos
- Senior Matthew Garred (euphonium), a native of Whiting, Iowa, and a student of Vance Shoemaker
- Senior Maren Jacobsen (mezzo-soprano), a native of Castle Rock, Colo., and a student of Judy Schreck
- Junior Sonora Ruybal (cello), a native of Westminster, Colo., and a student of Kathryn Hufnagle
In addition to featuring student artists, the orchestra will also play Dvorak's Symphony no. 9, entitled "From the New World."
"Dvorak was a Czech composer who lived and taught in the United States in the 1890s, and wrote much of his music in the summers in Iowa. He is considered to be the father of American music because his main goal was to "discover" American music, and encourage students to discover it as well," said Stanichar. "This is one of his most popular and powerful symphonies. Audience members will enjoy the energy and enthusiasm of the young musicians and community members in the Augustana Orchestra as they perform this challenging work."
