Archeology Awareness Days in Mitchell

Teams from the University of Exeter and AU with excavations in Mitchell

Photo by Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village. The annual dig began Tuesday, June 13. Teams from the University of Exeter and Augustana University will continue the excavations of this 1,000-year old Native American village on the banks of Lake Mitchell.

Special Events

  • Watch native technology demonstrations, such as flint knapping, and see exhibits of prehistoric stone tools and ceramics.
  • Native American youths will have cultural programs.
  • Tour the Thomsen Center Archeodome and watch excavations at this 1,000-year-old site by a team of Augustana and British students and faculty.
  • Meet professional archeologists and view a variety of displays on prehistoric and historic Archeology.
  • Native American cultural presenters will include Mike Marshall, a Lakota games specialist, who will teach youngsters the games his ancestors played; Jerome Kills Small and Belinda Joe will tell stories and legends of the First People; and award-winning potter Megan Sweets will demonstrate how she makes her uniquely stunning pottery.

  • Kids Dig (use the tools of archeologists to discover artifacts)
  • Make pottery using prehistoric techniques
  • Test your hunting skills using an atlatl-spear thrower
