Augustana Performing and Visual Arts presents The Augustana Band and their China Tour concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, in Hamre Recital Hall. The band will perform the tour program presented during their stops in Shanghai, Wuhan, Xian and Beijing during their 21-day concert and study tour in January 2019.
The Augustana Band typically has toured during the January Interim (J-Term) break and, beginning with the 1999-2000 academic year, has made it a practice to travel overseas during J-Term (thereby earning academic credit) once every four years. Their previous tours included China in 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015. In January 2011, the band traveled to Egypt and were in the country for the first few days of the Egyptian revolution.
Brad Heegel, director of Development for the Performing and Visual Arts, coordinated the band's tour and established a blog with details and photographs of their travels. Professor of Music Dr. John Pennington directed the academic coursework on the tour and Dr. Christopher Unger, Director of Bands, conducted the ensemble in some of China's most impressive concert halls.
