The Augustana Band and the Augustana Orchestra chamber ensembles will appear in concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, in Kresge Recital Hall. Tickets are $10, or $5 for students and seniors (65+), and are available at augietickets.com. Free with Augustana ID.
The Band Chamber Winds, conducted by Dr. Christopher Unger, will present John Mackey’s song-cycle “Songs from the End of the World” inspired by a passage in the Odyssey in which Odysseus, shipwrecked and near death, washes up on the shore of an island belonging to the nymph Kalypso. Dr. Russell Svenningsen is the featured tenor soloist.
Other selections include a movement from Symphony In Brass by Eric Ewazen performed by Augustana Band Brass Ensemble. The saxophone quartet will perform sections of Premier Quatuor, op. 53 by Jean Baptiste Singelee. Dr. Larry Peterson and Dr. Brian Hanegan conduct those groups.
The Chamber Orchestra will perform Vivaldi’s Concerto for Lute in D Maj, RV 93 with faculty soloist Geoff Gunderson. In addition, Dr. Peter Folliard will lead the group with excerpts from Haydn’s String Quartet in Eb Maj, Hob. III: 46 and selections from Sinfonietta for String Orchestra by Harald Genzmer.
