Two bands comprising nearly 200 musicians will join forces for the annual Augustana POPS Concert on Thursday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Augustana Elmen Center.
Leading the way will be The Augustana Blue & Gold Band, a group of more than 100 student-musicians and community members. Founded 30 years ago, this group has proven that regardless of profession (the ensemble includes physicians, teachers, lawyers, airline pilots and more), you can share your love of music and continue in its study, despite busy professional lives. The group will perform selections from Wicked as well as What's up at the Symphony? and a piccolo/tuba duet! Dr. Larry Petersen conducts. Petersen is assistant director of bands and music education. He directs the Blue & Gold Band and the Athletic Bands, as well as leads the coordination of the Augustana music teacher education program.
The Sioux Falls New Horizons Band is part of the New Horizons International Music Association (NHIMA) - an international non-profit organization designed to continue founder Roy Ernst’s vision of expanding music making opportunities for adults. New Horizons fosters a positive atmosphere for creating new adult bands, orchestras, choruses and other music groups. The Sioux Falls New Horizons Band provides entry points to music making for adults, including those with no musical experience at all and also those who were active in school music programs but have been inactive for a long period. The Band is directed by Byron Youngquist.
