About Rick Johns

Rick Johns is a craftsperson and creative artist who works in paint, drawing media, paper, concrete, and wood. “Primarily, I’m a painter who thinks about the medium more as a material, not unlike wood or concrete,” states Johns. Each medium has its own physical properties that must be engaged and responded to.

Johns works intuitively and abstractly, bringing an aesthetic of process and craft gained from decades of woodworking, design, and building projects. “A painting is a result of a process, not unlike anything made from raw materials,” notes Johns. “And is complete when a similar sense of beauty or ‘rightness’ is felt.”

Johns is based in Vermillion, South Dakota. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of South Dakota. His work has been exhibited at the South Dakota Art Museum, the Ipso Gallery in Sioux Falls, and the Sioux City Art Center, among many other venues. He has been included in the South Dakota Governor’s Biennial traveling exhibitions and the Briar Cliff Review.
