Sioux Falls native Kelley Mikkelsen to perform at Augustana

A native of Sioux Falls and Washington High School graduate in 1981, cellist Kelley Mikkelsen will appear at Augustana on September 20. Mikkelsen has performed in concerts throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, and has performed with numerous celebrated soloists, chamber musicians, and conductors including Yo-Yo Ma, Bobby McFerrin, Joan Tower, Renee Fleming, and Ursula Oppens, as well as the Cleveland, Juilliard, Colorado and Cavani Quartets.
Mikkelsen is on a tour of the Midwest and the new Hamre Recital Hall at Augustana is one of her featured performance sites. An Eastman School of Music graduate, Mikkelsen was an adjunct professor at Augustana while Principal Cellist with the South Dakota Symphony. She is currently Principal Cellist of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, Opera Roanoke, Opera on the James, the Virginia Ballet, and the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra. She plays a Bartolomeo Bimbi cello from Florence, Italy, dated 1780.
Ms. Mikkelsen will perform with Cara Ellen Modisett, a staff collaborative pianist at Radford University in Radford, Virginia and music director for St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church in Roanoke, Va. Cara is a graduate of James Madison University from which she received two
bachelor’s degrees - one in piano performance/accompanying and one in English/secondary education, with an honors undergraduate thesis in poetry.
The program, MUSICAL GEMS, will include several transcriptions of Schubert Lieder for cello and piano, including his Ave Maria; Beethoven's set of Seven Variations based on Mozart's The Magic Flute; and Claude Debussy's ever popular 'Clair de Lune'.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Hamre Recital Hall (formerly Kresge Recital Hall). Tickets are not required. Donations will be gratefully accepted to assist in the duo’s travel costs.
