The inaugural Argus Leader First Class program will honor 12 prospective first-generation college students who attend high school in the Sioux Falls area.

These students will be the first in their family to pursue post-secondary education. The goal of the program is to recognize, support and award students who demonstrate high-quality potential for success. We want to create opportunities and help students through the sometimes overwhelming process of applying for admission, scholarships and financial aid.

Through our partnership with Augustana University, students and families will receive the coaching, support and encouragement to make navigating the path from high school to college easier. For that reason, we invite high school juniors to apply so they can benefit from the program throughout their senior year.

First Class program recipients will also be awarded scholarships.

The Argus Leader will award each recipient $1,000 toward the cost of any university, college or technical school of their choosing.

First Class recipients who choose to attend Augustana University will receive a minimum $2,000 scholarship in addition to their Augustana University academic scholarship.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be juniors in high school during the 2017-18 academic year
  • More than one person from any given school may apply

Applicants for this scholarship should display academic preparedness for college. It is recommended that applicants possess a high school GPA at or above 3.0 and at least a 20 ACT composite score (students who do not meet both criteria and/or have not yet taken the ACT should still apply)

DEADLINE: Friday, June 8, 2018
