The New Reconstructed Mikkelsen Library

Within its existing superstructure, the $7 million renovation of Mikkelsen Library is now complete. The result is a learning, research and study destination that is highly functional and aesthetically inviting.

The project incorporates the latest technology in electronic information retrieval, along with enhanced library services and reconfigured study areas. The redesign promotes and accommodates the variety of ways in which students study, research and communicate. Additional enhancements include:

  • a state-of-the-art video production and editing suite
  • a striking, inviting fireplace seating area on the main floor
  • the addition of 80,000 theological volumes from the Sioux Falls Seminary, as part of a new collaborative agreement

A $6 million lead gift propelled this project onto a construction fast-track. Work began in April 2008 and was completed by April 19, 2009, the day of its re-dedication. The donors, who wish to remain anonymous, made their gift “to honor the goodness and glory of God, and in gratitude for Augustana College and its journey to become a premier college of the church in America.”  A plaque with the inscription, “Soli Deo Gloria! To God Alone the Glory,” greets visitors at the front entry.

Since 1954, the lights of Augustana's Mikkelsen Library have drawn in the campus and larger community. Whether light shining through the north bank of windows or the limestone statue of Moses symbolizing the light of knowledge, Mikkelsen is a welcoming place of scholarship and community, serving an integral role in the academic excellence of Augustana.

A number of unique naming opportunities still exist within the redesigned library. Development director Stephanie Larscheid is available to share these special opportunities with interested alumni and friends. Stephanie can be reached at 605.274.4323 or via email at
