Media Services, a department of Mikkelsen Library, is home to the media collection including: DVDs, CDs, audiotapes and other formats; audio-visual equipment and services including: delivery, setup, troubleshooting and pickup; and production facilities for creating new media. (See our brochure)
Media Library
Media Services is home to a diverse collection of media including
- films in DVD and VHS
- music on CDs and a small LP collection
- audiobooks on CD and cassette
- royalty-free production music and sound effects on CD
- Other instructional media CD-ROM software
All media are cataloged and accessible through the Library Catalog. After typing in your search terms, limit your search by format.
Members of the faculty may request that media be delivered to their office or classroom. Use the Mikkelsen Express request form.
Media Services cannot duplicate copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder, except under the limited scope of Fair Use. Please call Judith Howard (Ext. 4382) if you have copyright questions. Most of the production services provided by Media Services involve charges. Contact Media Services to get information on pricing.
Printing Services
- Large format (poster) printer
- Prints color or black and white documents up to 40" wide.
- Networked color laser printer
- Prints to plain paper, transparencies, card stock or photo paper.
- Color photo printers
- Print to plain or photo paper (8 1/2" x 11") Photo paper available in matte or glossy and labels for CDs and DVDs

Recording and duplication services
- Off-air recording of television programs
- Video and audio cassette duplication
- Transfer VHS videotape to DVD and duplicate foreign language tapes for student exercises
- Creation and duplication of data and music CDs
- PC and Mac based CD burners allow you to back up data files, create music CDs, and store images for later use.
Scanning and image editing
- Photoshop CS3 and Elements available for image editing
- Document and image scanning
- 35mm slide scanning
- Digitize your 35mm slides to print, to use in Powerpoint, or to archive on CD or DVD.Call Media Services (274.4920) to reserve a time to use the scanner. We are happy to help you get started, and to customize the settings so the resulting image is appropriate for your use.

- Video Editing
- Create videos for DVD, website, podcast.
- Call Media Services (Ext. 4920) to schedule the cameras and a time to use the Media Lab to edit your video. See our policy for using the multimedia lab
- Equipment available for video editing includes:
- 2 Apple IMac computers
- 1 Windows desktop computer
- All with DVD burners
- Combination mini-DV and VHS videocassette recorder
- Analog to digital media converter
- This is a device which digitizes analog video so it can be edited using computer software, and converts digital video to analog so it can be output to VHS tape.
- Edit your video and still images
- Software includes:
- iLife9 suite of software including iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto, iTunes etc.
- Final Cut Studio suite
- Final Cut Express
- Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop Elements (for image editing)
- Windows machine has:
- Adobe Premiere Elements
- Adobe Photoshop Elements
Audio-visual equipment is available for use by Augustana faculty, staff and students. Call Media Services (605.274.4920) or use the online Media/Equipment Request Form to schedule delivery of A-V equipment to your office or classroom.
Students who will be using equipment for a class should print out and sign the Equipment Use Agreement and bring it to Media Services before the equipment is needed. Equipment is scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Ideally, we would like to have 2 days notice of your need for equipment, but we do our best to accommodate last minute orders.

- Data Projectors
- Projects data and images from a computer, projects video from a VCR or DVD source
- Laptop Computers
- Media Services has a limited number of laptop computers for use outside the library. Call us to reserve a laptop, if needed. Smartcarts* are available in Gilbert Science Center, Madsen Center, and the Humanities Building. Contact the division office in each building to reserve these units.

- Closed Captioning Devices
- A device that connects to a VCR and the device providing the picture (either a data/video projector or television) and decodes the closed captioning on a video. Most televisions have closed captioning built in, but some older models still need this device to view captions. Some models of data/video projectors need this device. Call Media Services if you have questions about closed captioning.

*All smartcarts include a computer and a data/video projector. Some smartcarts also include a VCR/DVD player, a closed captioning device, and a document camera. Call your division office for more information.
