Argus Leader: Middle School Lego Teams Compete at Augustana

Alan Swanson, a retired engineer, and Dan Swets, a computer science professor at Augustana, organized the first informal FIRST Lego League meet in South Dakota at Augustana. Nationwide, about 100,000 students on 10,000 teams take part in FIRST Lego League, and the so-called scrimmage at Augustana was designed to acquaint the 10 teams from Sioux Falls, Brandon, Harrisburg and O'Gorman middle schools with what they will face in real competition Dec. 12 in Sioux City, Iowa. Success there leads to a place at the Iowa state meet, and beyond that to national competition.

Beginning in September, all the teams in the country build an identical basic robot then customize it with Legos to accomplish a set of tasks set forth by FIRST Lego League organizers. The teams of about 10 members each also develop oral presentations identifying a climate problem and propose a solution for it. Team members presented these Saturday at Augustana.
