Augustana Introduces New Viking Mascot

SIOUX FALLS – One year ago, Augustana College unveiled a new Viking Logo. Last weekend, the image came to life.
On Friday. February 20, The University of Mary Marauders invaded the Elmen Center for women’s and men’s Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference basketball games. Helping defend the home turf was a 7-FOOT VIKING MASCOT.
“We were really excited to introduce the Viking to our students and fans,” said Bryan Miller, athletic fundraising and promotions assistant. “The presence of the mascot added to the enthusiasm and excitement already being generated by our student section.”
Ole the Viking made his first appearance as Augustana’s official mascot in 1939. The 6-foot, 200-pound clay warrior soon became a familiar sight at Augustana athletic events and the Viking Days parades.
While Ole has remained the symbol of Augustana athletics, Augie Doggie came on the scene in the 1980s as the mascot. About six years ago, Augie Doggie was retired.
“With the passing of the North Central Conference, and Augustana competing in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference for the first time this year, we felt it was a good time to unveil a new Viking mascot,” Miller said. “The college has a new logo and now we have a new and improved Ole, live and in person!”
