SIOUX FALLS – The new Augustana College Viking logo and mask, as well as billboard images, were among the winners at the South Dakota Advertising Federation’s (SDAF) 43rd Annual ADDY Awards.
All the winning designs were created by Lawrence & Schiller Inc. of Sioux Falls.
The Viking Mask and Logo received Gold ADDY’s, while billboard entries were awarded Best of Class and Gold ADDY recognition.
"This was one of those rare opportunities in the history of Augustana to unveil a new image,” said Bob Preloger, Vice President for Marketing and Communications. “We are thrilled that it has been so enthusiastically received not only by those close to Augustana, but by the broader community as well. To receive ADDY's in multiple categories is wonderful affirmation of the fun planning and execution that went into the unveiling of the logo."
On February 21, 2008, before a standing room only crowd in the Morrison Commons Ordal Dining Room, members of the Augustana community witnessed the unveiling of the new Viking logo. The new logo has been well received on campus, in the community, and by alumni.
For the Vikings’ final 2008 home basketball games, life-size masks of the logo were developed and distributed to the Augustana student cheering section known as the “Augieholics.”
Discussions of creating a new logo began in 2006. Meetings of Augustana alumni, students and staff were held to determine if there was sufficient interest to proceed with the makeover. Encouraged by positive feedback, a 17-member committee representing all facets of the Augustana community was formed and began meeting with Lawrence & Schiller representatives.
With its Norwegian heritage, Augustana’s choice of the Viking is steeped in tradition. In addition, committee members stressed the importance of incorporating the strength, pride, determination, and honor associated with the legendary Vikings of the sea.
The Mission of the SDAF is to serve as a unified voice for sales, marketing and business professionals through award winning programs, the South Dakota ADDY Awards, educational opportunities including Student Day and a student advertising competition, and public service projects, while acting as a connecting point to the 8th District of the American Advertising Federation and the American Advertising Federation.
