Former Trustee Dick Niebuhr Dies at Age 64

SIOUX FALLS – Dick Niebuhr, 64, former member of the Augustana Board of Trustees, died Saturday, March 7, in Aberdeen, S.D.
A funeral service will begin at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen. Visitation is 1:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, March 13, with family present from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen (www.spitzerfuneral home.com).
Dick majored in history and philosophy at Augustana, graduating in 1966. He earned a master’s degree in European history from Rice University in 1968. While at Augustana he served on the Commons Advisory Board and was named to Who’s Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
He was a member of the Augustana Fellows, served on the Alumni Council, and was a member of the Board of Trustees from 1978-1990.
He was assistant professor of history at Southern Arkansas University from 1969-1973, and managed John G. Kinnard & Company in Aberdeen from 1973-1977. He worked as an independent investment counselor for many years.
Dick created the Vernon and Mildred Niebuhr Faculty Excellence Award at Augustana to provide an annual award to recognize excellence in teaching. It is named in honor of his parents “because they loved Augustana College dearly and because they were my first and best teachers.”
