Professor Emeritus Dr. Duane Matz Passes Away at 72
Dr. Duane Matz (1937-2009)
SIOUX FALLS – Dr. Duane Matz, 72, who taught history at Augustana College for 30 years, died Monday, August 17, in Minneapolis, Minn.
He was born August 8, 1937, in Milwaukee, Wis. He received his bachelor’s degree from Wartburg College, and his master’s degree from the University of Iowa. He earned a PhD in history at Illinois State.
Dr. Matz began teaching at Augustana in 1968. In1994 he became the first recipient of the Frederick C. Kohlmeyer Distinguished Teaching Professorship. Dr. Frederick Kohlmeyer, through a gift to Augustana upon his death in 1990, established this distinguished professorship to recognize and to reward outstanding teaching.
Dr. Matz also served as Chair of the History Department.
Survivors include his wife, Irene, and sons, Aaron, Joel, and Adam.
Visitation is from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, August 21, at Washburn-McReavy Hillside Chapel in Minneapolis. Funeral services begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 22, also at Washburn-McReavy Hillside Chapel.
A memorial service will be held in Sioux Falls at a later date.
Memorials are directed to the Duane Matz History Scholarship at Augustana College.
