Piece Premiered by Northlanders Jazz Band Earns Award
SIOUX FALLS – A piece premiered by Augustana’s Northlanders Jazz Band has received an “Editor’s Choice Award” from J.W. Pepper, the world’s largest retailer of sheet music.
In March 2007, the Northlanders Jazz Band under the direction of Dr. Paul Schilf, premiered a commissioned piece titled “Off The Hook.” Written by Jeff Jarvis, the piece was first played during the Jazz On The Upper Great Plains Festival hosted by Augustana.
“Off the Hook” is the Northlanders’ eighth commission in Dr. Schilf’s nine years at Augustana.

Dr. Schilf said “Off the Hook” will benefit from the added exposure it will now receive.
“It will most likely be played at the Jazz Reading session at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic and, above all, it will get the name of jazz at Augustana out to thousands of band directors across the world,” said Dr. Schilf, Associate Director of Bands at Augustana.
The 2009 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic will be held December 15-19 in Chicago.
Jarvis has distinguished himself as a trumpeter, composer, jazz educator, and music publisher. He serves as Director of Jazz Studies at California State University Long Beach and frequently appears as an honors jazz band conductor, clinician and lecturer.
He is the Music Director Emeritus of the Central New York Jazz Orchestra, and is a former vice-president of the International Association for Jazz Education. Jarvis is part-owner of Kendor Music, Inc., the first educational music publisher to provide jazz charts written especially for students.
William and Rachel Pepper founded J.W. Pepper in Philadelphia in 1845. The company now has 14 locations across the country.
