9:35 A.M. SUNDAY UPDATE: Augustana Students En Route to Amsterdam; Delta Confirms Plans for "Cleopatra" Group to Depart Monday
Student members of the Augustana Band and other members of the group’s Egyptian Tour, known as the “King Tut” and “Sphinx” groups have left Cairo International Airport, en route to Amsterdam, where they are scheduled to arrive at 8:15 p.m. (1:15 p.m. CST). The group will stay overnight in Amsterdam and is scheduled to arrive in Minneapolis at 12:15 p.m. CST Monday, Jan. 31, on Delta Flight No. 259. From there, the travelers will be bused to Sioux Falls.
Throughout the last 72 hours and with the help of U.S. Sen. John Thune, Augustana officials have been working closely with Delta Airlines to make arrangements for the remaining students and Tour travelers, known as the “Cleopatra” group, to depart on Monday, Jan. 31. This group’s originally scheduled departure from Cairo was set for Saturday, and then was rescheduled to Tuesday, Feb. 1.
Earlier this morning, Delta officials confirmed arrangements for the “Cleopatra” group to depart from Cairo on KLM Flight No. 554 on Monday, Jan. 31, at 2:25 p.m. (6:25 a.m. CST). Augustana will provide update at www.augie.edu.
“As always, the safety and security of our students remains our top concern,” said Rob Oliver, president of the College. “We have been in contact with our Tour leadership this morning and they report that the students are safe at their hotel and that they remain patient and understanding.”
“We have been working around the clock, doing all we can to get our students and accompanying travelers home as soon as possible. We are thankful to Sen. Thune and his staff for their assistance during this challenging time. We are working hard to make sure parents and family members have the most up-to-date information. To that end, we have fielded multiple requests from local and national media outlets and have directed those inquiries to our website, which we are updating throughout the day.”
Parents or family members who have questions may contact Augustana Campus Safety at 605.274.4014.
