Choir, Orchestra to Present Palm Sunday Concert

The Augustana Choir and the Augustana College & Community Orchestra will present a special Palm Sunday performance featuring Howard Hanson’s “Romantic” Symphony and Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem.

The concert will begin at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.

Hanson, son of Scandinavian immigrants, was born and raised in Wahoo, Neb., before becoming a major figure in American music. His “Romantic” Symphony was written during the Great Depression to give optimism and hope to American audiences.

Similar to Hanson’s quest for hopefulness, French composer Gabriel Fauré also wanted to express optimism and hope to his generation. His Requiem avoids references to damnation and includes a section entitled “In Paradisum,” or “in paradise” that is a sonic depiction of heaven itself.

Fauré’s Requiem features the Augustana Choir, with guest soloist and alumna, Stacey Stofferahn. Additional soloists from the Augustana Choir include David Stadem and Trey Sutherland.

Tickets are $5 for adults and are free for students K-12. Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 605.274.5320 or online at
