The Augustana Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) received a Student Classics Award at the annual Minnesota Public Relations Society of America (MPRSA) Classics Award Banquet and Ceremony held in Minneapolis.
Augustana’s win came in the New Media/Technology category for the group’s “Sioux Falls Tennis Association (SFTA) Social Media Jumpstart Campaign.”
“Our social media plan focused on developing an online presence for SFTA through Facebook and Twitter. From there, we worked to reach out to the greater Sioux Falls community to create awareness for the group. We also featured a mobile app through which tennis partners from the area could connect,” said senior Rachel Gerber, president of Augustana PRSSA.
The group also created a series of web-based, light-hearted SFTA taskforce videos to promote the off-season.
Last year, the Augustana PRSSA group took home a Classics Award for its work with the Sioux Empire Adoption Fair. The group also earned honors in 2007 and 2009 for work on the Adoption Fair and Special Olympics Polar Plunge.
The Classics Awards honor the work of students and professionals in the field of public relations. Students compete against their counterparts from schools across the Upper Midwest.
“This is an exceptional honor for an exceptional group of students,” said Dr. Michael Nitz, associate professor of communications studies. “This group absolutely understands the connection between social media and successful public relations. The insight and creative ideas the students developed paved the way for their clients to become ‘part of the conversation.’”
Minnesota PRSA is the tenth-largest chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the world’s largest organization for public relations professionals with nearly 32,000 professional and student members. PRSA is organized into more than 110 chapters nationwide, including 16 professional interest sections and affinity groups. Minnesota PRSA is comprised of more than 400 members who represent business and industry, counseling firms, independent practitioners, military, government, associations, hospitals, schools, professional services firms and nonprofit organizations.
