Augustana Runner Selected for Team USA
Thursday, March 1, 2012
Augustana freshman Adam Braun, a native of Shoreview, Minn., has been selected to represent Team USA at the North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships on Saturday, March 17, in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
Braun will be competing in the men's junior race. He is the second Augustana student-athlete to run with Team USA in international competition. Junior Kyle Blakeslee was a member of the women's team at the 2010 NACAC Cross Country Championships.
Braun posted a sixth-place finish at the USA Cross Country Championships held Feb. 11 in St. Louis, Mo. The top-five place winners qualify for the world team, making Braun the first alternate. An opening on the team became available after one of the qualifiers withdrew because of injury.
"This selection is a huge honor and speaks volumes about the fact that Adam is one of the brightest up-and-coming runners in the United States right now,” head cross country coach Tracy Hellman said. “He has a great opportunity to gain international experience that will help him in his future championship competitions."
Nations represented in the international event include the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Costa Rica, El Salvador, St. Vincent, Cuba, Belize, Nicaragua, Bermuda, Grenada, Guyana and Trinidad/Tobago.
In February, Braun was named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's All-Academic Team for 2011. He finished 68th at the 2012 NCAA Championship, helping the Viking men to sixth place in the team standings.
