Students Take Home Honors at ACS National Meeting

Two Augustana students were honored and Augustana’s Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) was recognized at the ACS National Meeting, held recently in San Diego, Calif.

Junior Bailey Jackson, an ACS chemistry major from Sioux City, Iowa, and senior Neal Gregerson, an ACS chemistry and physics major from Sioux Falls, were selected for the prestigious American Chemical Society SCI Scholars Summer Internship Program. Jackson and Gregerson are among only 32 students nationwide who were selected for this program, an honor given to the top chemistry students in the country who exhibit an interest and a passion for working in the industry. The students receive a generous stipend, travel allowance and an allowance to attend a conference of their choice.

Jackson will spend her internship at Milliken Chemical in Spartanburg, S.C., while Gregerson will be working at Momentive Specialty Chemicals in Columbus, Ohio. Jackson’s advisor is Dr. Barrett Eichler; Gregerson’s advisor is Dr. Eric Wells.

In addition, Augustana’s ACS Student Chapter received an Outstanding Award for its activities conducted during the 2010-2011 academic year. Across the nation, more than 329 activity reports were submitted for the 2010-2011 academic year. Among those, the ACS’ Society Committee on Education awarded only 36 Outstanding Honors.

Augustana was also recognized as a “green chapter” for successfully completing environmentally friendly chemistry activities.
