Augustana Mourns Loss of Alumni, Board Members
The Augustana community is mourning the loss of one current and one former member of its Board of Trustees.
Dr. John VanderWoude Jr., Augustana class of 1974 and a member of the Board since 2002, died on Tuesday, July 10, following a recurring battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He was 58.
After graduating from Augustana, VanderWoude attended Washington University School of Medicine (St. Louis, Mo.), where he also completed his residency and a fellowship in general surgery. He completed fellowships in cardiac and vascular surgery at Texas Heart Institute, Houston, Texas, and in pediatric cardiac surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, Calif. At Sanford Health, he specialized in vascular surgery for carotid disease, aortic disease and varicose veins; thoracic surgery for lung disease and esophagus disease; cardiac surgery (both adults and children) for open and closed bypass heart surgery, acquired and congenital heart disease, and valve disease.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, with a short program at 6 p.m., at the Sanford Center, 2301 E. 60th Street North in Sioux Falls. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 16, at First Lutheran Church, 327 S. Dakota Ave. in Sioux Falls. More details will be provided by Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls.
Gerald (Jerry) Knudson, Augustana class of 1965 and a member of the Board from 2005-2010, died on Wednesday, July 4, in Michigan City, Ind. He was 68. A business entrepreneur, Knudson most recently served as president of Asemblon, Inc., and was a partner in Octavisu Capital. He served in various leadership positions throughout his career for companies including General Electric, Acuson, Polaroid and Sterling Medical Imaging. He served as CEO of Fischer Imaging as well as Chairman and CEO of Resonex and CombiMatrix, Inc.
