Campus Commemorates Anniversary of King's 'I Have a Dream' Speech

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington, Augustana joined with universities across the country to commemorate the event and bring its message of freedom and justice to campus.

At 2 p.m. today, Augustana joined in a nationwide bell-ringing event to mark the exact time Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech, 50 years ago today.

Hundreds of thousands attended the March at the National Mall in 1963 to call for integration and economic equality.

Dr. Susan Hasseler, senior vice president for Academic Affairs and dean of the College, and Rev. Dr. Paul Rohde, campus pastor, called the event an important one and encouraged the campus community to work together to "ensure that 'justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream' for all."
