2013 Covenant Award Nominees Announced

Forty-nine students have been recognized as nominees for the 2013 Augustana Covenant Awards. The Covenant Awards will be presented during Verdier 2013 events, a week-long celebration of Augustana’s guiding values and ethics, set for March 18-22.

Hjerpe, Schulte Named 2013 Peace Prize Forum Scholars

Juniors Alexandra (Allie) Hjerpe (Hutchinson, Minn.) and Mallory Schulte (Yankton, S.D.) have been named the 2013 Peace Prize Forum Scholars. This summer, the two will spend seven weeks at the University of Oslo’s International Summer School deepening their understanding of issues related to peace, justice, democracy and human rights.

The Serendipity Experiment

After a chance meeting inside the hallway of Gilbert Science Center last fall, Augustana’s Dr. Jenny Gubbels and alumnus Dan Roesler, class of 1982, are working together to find new ways to fight ovarian cancer. 

Cancer Research by Augustana Grad Featured in National Journal

A new study on therapeutic targets for breast cancer co-authored by Allison (Eslinger) Watson, class of 2007, is the cover story of the February 2013 issue of Molecular Cancer Research, a national journal published by the American Association for Cancer Research.

BBC Features Research with Augustana Ties

In a recent news segment, "Dark Matter: Experiment to Shed Light on Dark Particles," BBC Science Reporter Rebecca Morelle explores research being gathered at Italy's Gran Sasso National Laboratory for the DarkSide-50 experiment, a project with ties to the Augustana Physics department.

An article by senior Sara Kohles investigating the origins of matrimonial diamond rings and the diamond industry's evolving response to changing social trends and economic pressures appears in the winter 2013 issue of Financial History, the magazine of the Museum of Finance.

Augustana Society of Physics Student Chapter Recognized

Augustana's Society of Physics Student Chapter has been recognized as an “Outstanding Chapter” by the national Society of Physics Students (SPS). The honor recognizes chapters who show a commitment to community outreach and service, contributions related to student recruitment and retention, and interaction with alumni.
