Nearly 4,000 fans packed Augustana's Elmen Center on Friday, April 5, for a concert by internationally known recording artists and hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. The event, organized by the UBG Big Event Committee, also featured Sioux Falls-based hip-hop group Soulcrate and a performance by sophomore Darren "D. Glove" Glover, a New York City-born, Minnesota-bred Augustana student.
Rafiullah (Rafi) Kakar, a native of Pakistan, attended Augustana in 2010 and was recognized by the selection committee as an individual with "outstanding intellect, character, leadership, and commitment to service." As a Rhodes Scholar, he will study at the University of Oxford.
In an effort to help those in need this holiday season, Augustana students are collecting gifts for area children, teens, families and individuals in need. Gift ideas are included on Christmas trees located throughout campus. Gifts can be deposited through Wednesday, Dec. 12. New this year, Augustana students are overseeing Teen Town, a Salvation Army program that provides gifts to teens from low-income families.
Since her founding in 1860, our Augustana has seen many pioneers – men and women committed to passing on knowledge and skills, fostering faith and encouraging exploration and discovery in generations of young men and women who have gone on to serve the world in various capacities.
In this issue of The Augustana, we pay tribute to some of our own pioneers, including the iconic Dr. Sven Froiland, Dr. Greg Schultz ‘74, Dr. Carole Miserendino ‘79, Dr. David Bader ’74, biologist-turned artist Domonique Venzant ’02 and others.
The Augustana community celebrated the start of the holiday season at the annual "Lighting of the Augustana Christmas Tree" Tuesday night. The event included holiday crafts, photos with Ole and Christmas carols led by members of The Augustana Choir. Ahead of its 2013 European Tour, The Augustana Choir will perform alongside Angelus, the Collegiate Chorale, the Chamber Choir and the Augustana Orchestra in "Light of My Soul," Augustana's Christmas Vespers performance series celebrating the birth of Christ.
Center for Western Studies Named Repository for Blue Cloud Abbey-American Indian Culture Research Center (AICRC) Collection
The Center for Western Studies has been named the repository for more than 4,000 books, 40,000 photographs and various artifacts from the Blue Cloud Abbey-American Indian Culture Research Center (AICRC) collection, previously housed at the Benedictine monastery near Marvin, S.D.
Augustana junior Amanda Johnson and sophomore Eric Habbe won top honors at the American Chemical Society Midwest Regional Meeting, held recently in Omaha, Neb. Twenty Augustana students attended the meeting to present their research and gain professional development skills.
Augustana will celebrate the global perspectives and cultural diversity alive on campus during “International Education Week,” Nov. 12-16. Nationally known writer and linguist Deborah Fallows will be on campus Thursday to share lessons on life, love and language.
On Saturday, 50 students gathered in the Siverson Lounge to read and enjoy F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" at Augustana's second annual Reading Marathon hosted by the Alpha Xi Mu chapter of Sigma Tau Delta (the international honors society for English majors and minors).
