Hundreds Turn Out to Celebrate Retiring AU President, First Lady

Hundreds gathered on campus and many more took to social media on Friday to celebrate retiring President Rob Oliver and First Lady Angie Oliver on a day proclaimed as #OliverDay

A morning worship service featured a greeting by the Rev. David Zellmer, bishop of the South Dakota Synod of the ELCA, and a message from the Rev. Dr. Paul Rohde, campus pastor.

Oliver went on to join students for lunch in the Ordal Dining Room where Augustana Student Association leaders presented him with an inscribed "Viking Ax" in recognition of his service to Augustana and its students. See video of the student presentation

In the afternoon, students, faculty, staff and friends joined Oliver and his family for an outdoor picnic on campus.

On Saturday, Oliver learned that gifts and pledges to the Oliver Innovation Fund, designed to provide venture capital to inspire the faculty to create transformative student-centered learning experiences, have reached more than $650,000.

Also on Saturday, Augustana presented Oliver with the commissioned poem, "Here and Then," written by Writer-in-Residence Patrick Hicks, in celebration of his leadership.

In the video version of "Here and Then," Dr. Sandra Looney, professor of English, reads the poem.
