King Named 2017-18 ASA Faculty Recognition Award Recipient

Students surround Libby King after she was surprised with the 2017-18 ASA Faculty Recognition Award in class on Friday, March 23.

Libby King, biology lab coordinator and instructor, is the recipient of the 2017-18 Augustana Student Association Faculty Recognition Award. The award recognizes outstanding teaching and contributions to the Augustana community by a faculty member.

Students nominate professors they feel display one or more of the five core values of the University (Christian, Liberal Arts, Excellence, Community, Service) as well as how those faculty members have positively impacted their experiences at Augustana.

Following are excerpts from student nominations of King:

"Libby has a genuine care for students that is truly special. She approaches every situation with optimism and assumes the best of others, exemplifying kindness and gratitude on a daily basis. Libby has been a supporter, encourager, role model and friend to me as she serves as my academic advisor. She teaches concepts and values with a passion that is greater than anyone else I have ever met, all while sharing her huge heart and warm smile,” one student nominator wrote.

“Libby is what I want to be like when I ‘grow up.’ She is kind, patient, brilliant, and most importantly, has the coolest style of anyone in the FSC. You can find her with a smile on her face, hair up with a bow, Patagonia fleece, and Birkenstock clogs. She always stops to show genuine interest in your life and studies, even when you no longer have a class with her. She is simply the best,” another student nominator wrote.

Another student called King “one of the most kind-hearted, genuine professors that I have had the pleasure to be in class with.”

“She cares so much about the students in her labs and goes above and beyond to make them feel welcome and wanted. She makes sure to tell you that her door is always open, whether you have a question to ask her or simply want to talk. She is such an amazing person and I am so thankful that I have had the opportunity to know her."

Another student wrote there is “nothing better than watching her get excited about what you're studying or looking at.”

“She makes class interesting and fun just by being excited to be there and teach. Libby truly embodies what it means to love what you do, and I think that everyone who knows her hopes to grow up and be as excited about life as she is.”

In 2016, King was named a recipient of the Augie Pride Award in recognition of her contributions to Augustana.
