Senior Reflects on Internship Behind the Lens
Video edited and produced by Taylor Yocum.
In between classes, coursework and papers, senior Taylor Yocum, a communication-business and interdepartmental major, has spent the last few months working as an intern for Mud Mile Communications, an award-winning Sioux Falls-based marketing and communications firm. Mud Mile specializes in creative content, video and traditional advertising, public relations and communications.
Yocum worked on projects for multiple Mud Mile clients, including Lloyd Companies and Augustana University.
"Learning how to edit has been amazing," Yocum said. "We consume so much content each and every day whether it be from television or on the internet and learning how those things work and the work that goes into them — it's been really interesting to see. It's taught me so much."
Jolene Loetscher and Nate Burdine, owners of Mud Mile Communications, said emerging media and new advances in website functionality have created new opportunities for the use of video, which in turn creates opportunities for internships like Yocum's.
"Video is the most powerful content tool that businesses can use on the web right now. Studies show watching video accounts for one-third of all online activity. To help our clients create that content, we look for talent who understands how to tell a strong story, connect with the right audience and engage the best tools, both emerging and traditional, to share the video. Taylor helps us keep our creative fresh, fun and fruitful for our clients. He also provides a unique perspective as an Augustana student since he helped in the development of several videos for Augustana," Loetscher said.
As business owners and employers, Loetscher and Burdine said Augustana students stand out as potential employees.
"In a workplace setting, Augustana students stand out because of their liberal arts background," Loetscher said. "They come prepared with strong problem-solving skills to tackle a range projects. As a small business, Mud Mile focuses on delivering exceptional customer service and it's important for our employees to be nimble and ready to take on anything.
"Augie does a great job preparing students who are thoughtful, creative and caring."

"Augie students, like Taylor, understand that job duties might change from day to day, but they work hard every day at solving problems and they do it with a wonderful attitude. As an employer, you can teach technical skills, but the ability to solve problems and ask questions from day one makes Augustana students exceptional," she said.
