Our Story: 1860-2010

Freshmen register for classes in the 1940s

Augustana's history is written on the hearts of its alumni and friends. The memories held dear, the stories that have been retold time and time again amongst close friends, the photos, lettermen's sweaters, beanies, buttons and other pieces of Augustana memorabilia hidden in your closet all serve as happy reminders of the “good ol’ days” at Augie.

During our Sesquicentennial, we offered you the chance to share your story with the entire community.

Many people proudly displayed their memories in the AC150 Facebook photo album. Posted on the page are photos of Collectibles, Rarities, Antiques, and Peculiarities for everyone to see! You can still make comments or share the behind-the-scenes story, embarrassing moment, or cherished memory that accompanies each treasure.

You (and your memories) are a critical part of the Augustana story. We hope you will help us continue to tell it for generations to come.

Notable Events in Augustana History

AC150 Celebration: June 5, 2010 — Also celebrating their sesquicentennial is our sister institution, Augustana College in Rock Island, IL. On June 5th, more than 100 representatives of Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill.,  the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)  and members of Jefferson Prairie Lutheran Church in Poplar Grove, Ill., gathered at the church to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the formation of the Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran Augustana Synod. The observation of the founding included a signing of the Sesquicentennial Compact by President Rob Oliver, Augustana College-SD, and President Steven Bahls, Augustana College-IL, and ELCA Director of Colleges and Universities the Rev. Mark Wilhelm. The compact was signed at the same table used to sign the original constitution creating the Augustana Synod in 1860.
