Mark HechtMark Hecht
Director of Recreational Services

Mark Hecht has been Director of Recreational Services since 1988. Prior to his current position at Augustana University, he previously worked as a teacher/coach at Aurora High School in Aurora, Nebraska, for four years. He graduated with an M.S. in Kinesiology from the University of Minnesota in 1992 and graduated cum laude with a B.A. in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from Augustana University in 1984. Mark has been a member of NIRSA (National Intramural Recreational Sports Association) for 26 years, serving the Association in a variety of capacities. His past NIRSA contributions include being member of various committees including Professional Ethics, Nominations and Elections, and NIRSA Blue Ribbon committee; Presenter at NIRSA Region V Conferences and Minnesota State Conferences; and South Dakota/North Dakota NIRSA State Director and winner of the 2009 Regional Award of Merit.

Carmen HechtCarmen Hecht
Assistant Director

Carmen Hecht (a native of New Brighton, MN) has been at Augustana University for the last 32 years. She earned her bachelor's degree from Augustana University in 1987 in Health, Physical Education and Recreation with a coaching endorsement. She then went on to finish her Masters degree in Secondary Education in 1991. While a student at Augustana she played on the Varsity Volleyball team where she was Captain, All-Conference (3 yrs), NCC Player of the week and made several all -tournament teams. She is part of the 1,000 Kill club and is 2nd all time in career service aces. In 1988 she went on to become the Head Volleyball Coach for two years (record 43-42). In 1990 she joined the Recreational Services Department as a Assistant Director where she continues today. From 2003-2007 she was the State Director for the National Intramural and Recreation Sports Association. Carmen has been a member of NIRSA (National Intramural Recreational Sports Association) for 17 years.

Sherry OlsonSherry Olson
Assistant Director - Aquatics

Sherry Olson is the Assistant Director of Recreational - Aquatics. Originally from Freeman, SD, she graduated from Augustana University in 2001 with a double major in Biology and Secondary Education, as well as endorsements in Middle School teaching, and Volleyball and Track and Field coaching. Sherry was also a member of the Augustana Track and Field team as a long jumper. In 2007 she earned her Masters of Education in Administration, Leadership emphasis, from the University of Sioux Falls. She taught middle and high school science and coached for nine years before joining the Rec Services Staff.  Sherry’s swim background includes lifeguarding since the age of 15 and being WSI certified from the age of 17. Since then she has lifeguarded, taught lessons, and managed several pools in South Dakota and Nebraska. She has worked as a part of the Augustana LTS program since she was a student here, and has had continued involvement in many aspects of the program until her current position of program Director.

Chad BarmChad Barmanan
Assistant Director — Intramurals

Chad Barman (a native of Sun Prairie, WI) is currently in his sixth year as head of the intramural program, third as Assistant Director of Recreation — Intramurals. Chad earned his Bachelor of Arts from Augustana University in Sport Management in 2012.  He has been a member of NIRSA (National Intramural Recreational Sports Association) for since 2009 and served as the South Dakota Student State Representative for  the 2013-2014 school year. Chad has been part of the Augustana Recreational Services Staff first as a student then professional since September of 2009. Away from Augustana, Chad is the Sioux Falls Washington head varsity baseball coach and Sioux Falls East Jr. Legion head baseball coach.

Shauna Maurer

Graduate Assistant — Outdoor Program

Shauna Maurer, a native of Cushing, MN, has recently joined the Rec Services staff as the Augie Outdoor Program Coordinator as a graduate assistant. Shauna joins the Augustana community with a strong background in outdoor pursuits, having graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 2015 with dual degrees in Biology as well as Environmental and Outdoor Education/Recreation. While at the University of Minnesota Duluth(UMD), she held the position of Volunteer Coordinator for UMD’S well-know Outdoor Program. In May of 2015, Shauna completed an internship through UMD’S Recreational Services Outdoor Program (RSOP), where she learned valuable skills relating to all areas of campus recreation programming including helping to develop a new Emergency Action Plan for their campus recreation center. Shauna is a recent member of NIRSA (National Intramural Recreational Sports Association) as well as the PCIA (Professional Climbing Wall Instructors Association) and WMA (Wilderness Medical Associates) where she holds a CWI (Climbing Wall Instructor) certification as well as a WFR (Wilderness First Responder) certification. Shauna is currently pursuing her Master of Arts in Sports Administration and Leadership through Augustana.

Keifer LunnKiefer Lunn
Graduate Assistant — Recreational Services

Kiefer Lunn, a native of Pipestone, MN, is currently in his 3rd year with Recreational Services. This is his first year as the Augustana Recreational Services Graduate Assistant. Lunn graduated in May of 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sport Management from Augustana University and currently is pursuing his Master of Arts in Sports Administration and Leadership. While at Augustana, he had an internship with the Augustana University Athletic Department and also a Team Leader for Augie Rec Services. Outside of Augustana he has had internships with the Sioux Falls Canaries and the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League, an organization that has won back to back USHL Organization of the Year Awards. He has been the Head Umpire for Little League Baseball in Pipestone, as well as the volunteer assistant coach for the Pipestone VFW baseball team. Currently he is the Sioux Falls East Jr. Legion Assistant Baseball Coach.
