Challenging the Intellect

With a student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1, the personal atmosphere of the classrooms allows open dialogue and interaction. Our professors encourage conversation as students connect concepts, consider their larger implications, and apply their significance to real-life situations.

Experiential learning takes place at Augustana through discovery and experimentation, internships, student teaching, off-campus study and hands-on research. And because Augustana professors from across the academic disciplines often invite their students to collaborate on their scholarly projects, our students work on teams making innovative breakthroughs and even present their findings at national conferences.

National Recognition

Augustana is a place where imaginations are fired and intellects are engaged, which contributes to why we consistently receive national recognition for academic excellence in rankings:

Augustana A-C logo October 2012 — Augustana ranks high in both academics and athletics in the 10th annual NCSA Athletic Recruiting Collegiate Power Rankings. Augustana is ranked fourth among NCAA Division II schools and 28th amongst 1,066 active NCAA member schools. The NCSA Athletic Recruiting power rankings assess the academic and athletic standards of all NCAA athletic programs across the country. Augustana is the only school listed in the overall top 100 from South Dakota or North Dakota. Fewer than six percent of colleges and universities earned a spot in the NCSA top 100 for 2012, Augustana is in this elite class.

For the second year in a row, U.S. News has ranked Augustana among the best colleges in the Midwest.

Augustana is ranked No. 3 among the "Best Regional Colleges in the Midwest" according to the latest edition of “Best Colleges 2013” by U.S. News Media Group. The College also received high rankings in the report’s analysis of schools that offer students the best value. Among the regional colleges listed in the “Best Value Schools” study, Augustana is ranked No. 2 in the Midwest.

Augustana is ranked the No. 11 baccalaureate college in the nation, according to a recent report from Washington Monthly. The publication’s "2012 College Ranking" rates 352 baccalaureate institutions according to their contribution to the public good in three areas — social mobility: recruiting and graduating low-income students; research: producing cutting-edge scholars and Ph.D.s; and service: encouraging students to give something back to their country.

Augustana has again been ranked among the best colleges in the Midwest, according to the nationally known education services company, The Princeton Review. The College is one of 153 premier institutions The Princeton Review recommends in its "Best in the Midwest" section of its website feature, "2013 Best Colleges: Region by Region."

August 2012 — Augustana is again ranked among the nation’s best colleges and universities and is again the highest-ranked undergraduate institution in South Dakota, according to Forbes’ recently published annual list of “America’s Top Colleges.” Forbes ranked 650 of the top U.S. undergraduate colleges and universities based on quality of teaching, career prospects, graduation rates and low student indebtedness. Augustana was ranked:

  • No. 187 in the nation, the highest rank among the three South Dakota institutions listed (South Dakota State University was ranked No. 564; the University of South Dakota was ranked No. 434) and a 25-point increase from its 2011 standing (No. 212).
  • No. 151 among private colleges nationwide
  • No. 34 in the Midwest
