March 21: When Mathematics Meets YouTube
What happens when 1.7 million people encounter high-level mathematics on YouTube? Möbius Transformations, that's what.
Augustana alumnus Dr. Jonathon Rogness, class of 1998 and an assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Minnesota, will discuss "When Mathematics Meets YouTube," his insight on the development of the short film, “Möbius Transformations Revealed,” an award-winning piece that illustrates how moving to a higher dimension can make high-level math easier to understand.
After winning honors from the National Science Foundation and Science magazine, “Möbius Transformations Revealed” went viral, with unexpected and entertaining results. Rogness will describe the behind-the-scenes making of the movie, explore the mathematics it illustrates, and show the reactions of YouTube users who discover the visual allure of mathematics.
A topologist by training, Rogness has become well-known for his mathematical visualizations for use in and outside of the classroom. He is the director of the university's Mathematics Center for Educational Programs (MathCEP), which runs one of the nation's premier accelerated mathematics programs for middle- and high-school students.
