Augustana Students Conduct Summer Research

This summer, senior Elle Tornberg, an ACS chemistry major from Harrisburg, S.D., is working in a lab at the University of Iowa conducting research under Dr. Alexander Horswill, an associate professor of microbiology. Alongside Horswill and his team, Tornberg, a Goldwater Scholar, is studying “Characterizing potential quorum sensing inhibitors in S. aureus.”

Here on campus inside the Gilbert Science Center, sophomore bio-chem major Dannah Miller, a native of Mankato, Minn., is working alongside Dr. Jetty Duffy Matzner, associate professor of organic chemistry, on a solar-cell related research project. In another lab in the same building, junior biology major Tyson Lager, a native of Freeman, S.D., is working with Dr. Jenny Gubbels, assistant professor of biology, to study ovarian cancer metastasis.

Tornberg, Miller and Lager are just three of 70 Augustana students who are spending the summer conducting scientific research on campus and at facilities throughout the U.S. as part of the College's Undergraduate Summer Research Program, an initiative that places students in laboratories, hospitals and research institutions nationwide.

In addition, 15 Augustana students are completing competitive internships in health sciences-related fields this summer.

Support the Froiland Science Complex
Be one of the many proud alumni and friends whose gifts are building the Froiland Complex.

"The ability for our students to immerse themselves in cutting-edge research, engage in hands-on practice, understand how to analyze and interpret data, and learn how to effectively communicate their findings is simply invaluable, said Rob Oliver, president. "The Undergraduate Summer Research Program at Augustana is an initiative that offers our students opportunities to gain real-world experience by working alongside and learning from faculty mentors, health professionals and research scientists. It's a program we're very proud of."

"This summer's group of student researchers includes sophomores, juniors, seniors – that's among the most significant features of Augustana's Undergraduate Research Program. The opportunity for our students to participate in these experiences after their freshman year paves the way for them to obtain even more advanced research posts in their later years of study. It's precisely the reason why so many of our graduates who go on to graduate school are able to participate in graduate-level research during the first year of their master's or Ph.D. programs," Oliver said.
