Mathematics

Why study mathematics?

Students who study mathematics will develop the necessary problem-solving skills for successful careers in the digital age, which has created the need for a mathematically literate workforce.

  • Highly qualified faculty teach classes in advanced mathematics topics and maintain a focus on research and personalized courses of study.
  • Students have all-day access to the Mathematics Learning Lab, which has wall-to-wall chalkboards and write-on glass — adjacent to professors' offices.
  • Students have access to math programs and databases like MathSciNet and Maple.

Careers

Mathematics graduates excel in careers as teachers, actuaries, researchers, engineers, professors and computer programmers. Many also pursue graduate degrees.

Hands-On Learning

Internship opportunities include:

  • Citibank
  • Sammons Financial
  • SAIC
  • Sioux Falls School District (SFSD)
  • Wells Fargo

Augustana students often participate in independent research with faculty and in the National Science Foundation’s highly competitive Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs). Most programs pay students a stipend, as well as covering travel and living expenses.

Typically, first year students and sophomores participate in on-campus projects and apply in early spring following sophomore or junior years to participate in an REU.
