Part of the Department of Education’s direct loan program, a PLUS loan is borrowed by a parent on behalf of a child who is a dependent or by a graduate student. Beneficiaries must be enrolled at least half time.
To be eligible for a PLUS Loan, you must pass a background check, meet citizenship requirements and be enrolled at least half-time in a degree program.
To apply, visit studentaid.gov and sign in with your parent ID.
PLUS Loan applications must be completed through the studentaid.gov site annually. However, the master promissory note only needs to be completed the first time a family applies for a PLUS Loan.
