Biography 

Dr. Bart W. Miles joined Augustana University in 2022 as the inaugural director of the Harriet Emily Scott Social Work Program, which will include a BSW and MSW program. He comes to Augustana after 10 years at Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan, where he served as chair of the department of social work & sociology. Miles also served as full-time faculty in the School of Social Work at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, after coming out of his Ph.D. program. Miles completed his doctoral degree in social work in 2003, MSW in 1998 at Arizona State University and Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Dordt College.

 

Miles has expertise in treatment of children & adolescents, homelessness and various qualitative methodologies, including critical discourse analysis, interpretive methods, participatory action research, visual ethnography and computer assisted data analysis. While teaching in higher education Miles has remained engaged in the social work community through a variety of activities including serving on boards, consulting with agencies, grant writing and nonprofit evaluation. Prior to his stint in higher education, Miles spent several years in practice with at-risk youth, including in-home therapy with children in foster care, a teen girls’ runaway shelter, youth emancipation program, adolescent treatment facilities, outpatient counseling with children & families, teen diversion programs, adolescent groups homes and a teen fatherhood program. When not social working, Miles enjoy spending time outdoors with his lovely wife Jennifer, stepson Nic and adorable dog Ellie.
