Environmental activist and writer Charmaine White Face received the Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Preservation of the Northern Plains on Friday, April 21, 2017, at Augustana's annual Dakota Conference.
White Face, a spokesperson for the Sioux Nation Treaty Council, advocates for adherence to the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868. She was one of more than 70 presenters from eight states at the 2017 Dakota Conference, a public affairs program of the Center for Western Studies.
The 2017 Dakota Conference theme was "Religion and Spirituality in the Northern Plains," occasioned by the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Papers on many varieties of religious expression were presented at Augustana on April 21-22. Augustana students and faculty also presented.
