The faculty shall consist of teachers with the ranks of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, or Instructor, and any other designated by the President.

PositionTitle: Assistant/Associate Professor & Director of Curriculum

Augustana University seeks applications for a full-time, Director of Curriculum, a 12-month non-tenured faculty appointment at the level of Assistant, Associate or Professor for the developing hybrid Doctor of Physical (DPT) Program to start in June of 2021.  This accelerated two-year DPT program is a blend of online and on-campus activities that allow faculty members to live remote to Augustana University.  However, DPT faculty members must be able to travel and stay in Sioux Falls, SD or Minneapolis, MN for designated time periods each semester.  The successful candidate will have teaching experience in higher education, a developed research and scholarship agenda, a record of community service, and a spirit of innovation to explore new teaching strategies in hybrid learning. 

Responsibilities: The Director of Curriculum is responsible for all program curricular planning, implementation, and review processes. Works directly with program faculty to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated curriculum based on foundational documents, best evidence, and contemporary clinical practice. Directs the evaluation of stakeholder input as part of ongoing curriculum review processes. Serves as Chair of Curriculum Committee, which serves as the primary coordinating body for all issues involving the DPT curriculum. This committee educates faculty regarding the overall curriculum and how each course contributes to the overall curricular design; responds to college policies, employer, student and graduate feedback, and accreditation standards; conducts regular meetings with the faculty related to the curriculum; and coordinates the Annual Curriculum Review.  Responsible for institutional curricular review within the Graduate Education Committee and Curriculum Council at the University. 

Qualifications: The optimal candidate should possess an understanding of higher education and contemporary physical therapy practice; knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting didactic and clinical education, students, and the profession of physical therapy; and activity in professional activities at local, state, and/or national levels.  In addition, excellent communication and strong computer skills are required to meet the needs of our online didactic instructional format.

Individuals will possess a terminal academic doctorate in a discipline appropriate for teaching responsibilities (Ph.D., EdD, DSc, etc.) or Doctor of Physical Therapy degree (or tDPT), with American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) or certification credentials appropriate for their teaching responsibilities.  This position is a non-tenure track with salary and rank commensurate with qualifications.  The candidate, if a physical therapist, must possess an active physical therapy license in their home state and be eligible for licensure in the states of South Dakota and Minnesota.

PositionTitle: Assistant or Associate Professor - Nursing

Department: Nursing

POSITION:  The Augustana University Nursing Department invites applications for tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor.  A research doctorate in nursing or related discipline is preferred, as is graduate level course work in mental health and/or adult/gero medical-surgical clinical specialty areas. Additional qualifications or interest in obtaining advanced practice certification as a CNS or NP is a plus. Support for research and completion of the research doctorate is available for eligible candidates. All eligible candidates will be considered.

DUTIES:  Successful applicants will demonstrate strong commitment to student-centered teaching excellence in an expanding nursing program within the context of the liberal arts. The learning environment offers state-of-the art active learning classrooms and high-fidelity simulation laboratories. Opportunity exists to shape new educational programming at the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as the research core in nursing. Courses to be taught are dependent on specialization and interests of the successful applicant.

Augustana’s progressive undergraduate nursing program is recognized for the excellence of its graduates and for its experienced, creative, and engaging faculty.  The Department of Nursing has both a traditional baccalaureate program and an accelerated curriculum for students with BA/BS degrees. Planning for graduate education is in process. Opportunities exist for interdisciplinary research and collaboration with colleagues in health and life sciences, as well as in social science and the humanities. International study and exchange opportunities for students and faculty are a distinguishing feature of AU’s educational programming. The Nursing Department celebrates 75 years of excellence in nursing education.  The nursing program has had a first-time NCLEX pass rate of 94-100% for several years. 

QUALIFICATIONS: Earned research doctorate preferred, graduate level preparation and practice experience in a clinical specialty (mental health preferred), teaching excellence, and a habit of scholarly productivity.

PositionTitle: The Nef Family Chair of Political Economy

Department: Government and International Affairs

Augustana University (Sioux Falls, SD) invites applications for an endowed chair in political economy.  The Rudy & Marilyn Nef Family Chair of Political Economy will advance the study of market economies and representative democracies, both within the campus community and in the region. This tenure-track faculty position will be housed in the Government and International Affairs Department.  The Nef Family Chair will draw on a breadth of research and extensive teaching experience to contribute recognized scholarship and enthusiastic, effective instruction to the University’s offerings in economics, political science, public policy, and business. 

We seek an outstanding teacher/scholar who reflects the foundational relevance of economic analysis in the design and administration of public policies, and who speaks authoritatively to the role of free markets, localized decision making and competition in a free society.  The Nef Family Chair will offer a range of foundational and upper-level courses in the Government and Economics Departments.  Foundational courses will include Microeconomics and Comparative Politics.  Upper-level courses could focus on areas such as Comparative/International Political Economy, Comparative/International Politics, and Policy Analysis, but a successful candidate must offer a course focused on capitalist economic systems. The Nef Family Chair will also provide collaborative and creative leadership in partnership with the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies.

Additional responsibilities will include student advising, student research mentorship, and planning and facilitating public symposia relevant to the scholar’s teaching and research. Interacting with students, faculty and leadership with different backgrounds and points of view and a deep appreciation of and respect for academic values and culture must be a top value of the candidate. A doctorate is required. Compensation, rank and length of tenure track will be commensurate with experience. The starting date for this 12-month appointment is August, 2021. Screening will begin March 19 and continue until the position is filled. Finalists will be expected to present an engaging topic as part of the interview process.

PositionTitle: Visiting Assistant Professor - Sociology

Position Type: Full-Time

Department: Sociology

Augustana University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Sociology Department, to begin Fall 2021.

Responsibilities: The successful applicant will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching in a liberal arts environment, coupled with teaching ability in the areas of medical sociology, gender, and social inequality.  Experience or special interest in gender and aging/gerontology is welcomed.

The load for this position is three courses per semester plus one course during our January term. Applicants should be prepared to teach the following courses at a minimum: Intro to Sociology, Medical Sociology, Social Inequality, and Race and Gender in Medicine and Health Care (or equivalent), plus a sociology topics course of the applicant’s choosing during the January term.

The University will seek applications for a tenure track position with similar teaching responsibilities to start Fall 2022; the successful VAP candidate is welcome to apply.
