Dr. Jeffrey J. Behrens Scholarships

First Behrens Scholarship Recipient

Pictured: In 2014, Nate Kirby was the first recipient of the Dr. Jeffrey J. Behrens Sports Medicine Scholarship. A 2015 graduate, Kirby was an athletic training major and played football for the Augustana Vikings.

 

Two scholarships are given annually to Augustana students as memorial tributes to the significant contributions of Dr. Jeffrey J. Behrens. The scholarships were created and funded by Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

Dr. Jeffrey J. Behrens Athletic Training Scholarship

This annual scholarship is awarded to an athletic training student at Augustana University. Recipients of this award are selected by the certified Athletic Training staff of the University. Applicants are evaluated on academic integrity, work ethic, acceptance of responsibility, willingness to help others and their commitment to athletic training.

Dr. Jeffrey J. Behrens Sports Medicine Scholarship

The recipient of this annual scholarship should preferably be a senior, participating in intercollegiate athletics or be a declared Athletic Training major, and plan on working in a health-related field or attending graduate school in a health-related field after graduating. Preference is given to applicants who possess a cumulative GPA greater than 3.2.

About Dr. Jeffrey J. Behrens

Behrens provided numerous services to Augustana. He served primarily as the medical director of Sports Medicine, team physician, lecturer and mentor to the athletic training students. He was an exceptional doctor and will always be remembered for his persistent work ethic, passion for sports medicine, humor and compassion to help others. Behrens was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on Sept. 11, 2000.
