At its most recent meeting, held on Dec. 4-5, the Augustana University Board of Trustees installed three new board members.
Joining the Board of Trustees for three-year terms, beginning in January 2021, are:
Dr. Maria Bell earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana University in 1984, and her medical degree from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine.The Aberdeen, South Dakota native completed her residency at the University of Chicago, fellowship at the University of Alabama, Masters of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University and Masters of Business Administration at Duke University. Bell is currently a gynecologic oncologist at Sanford Health and the chief medical officer of Sanford Development and Research, a post she has held since July of 2010. In her position, Bell facilitates physician research, mentoring physicians to get their research ideas focused and definable, as well as connecting the researcher to the appropriate services such as the Institutional Review Board (IRB), funding sources or collaborating bench researchers. Bell is an internationally recognized leader in robotic gynecologic surgery and is a fellow with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, International College of Surgeons, Society of Gynecologic Oncology and American College of Surgeons. She is also a current faculty member at the USD Sanford School of Medicine and serves as a trustee for Sanford Health. Bell’s daughter, Gabi, graduated from Augustana in December of 2019.
Jillian Klein earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana in 2001, Masters of Arts from Luther Seminary and Master of Business Administration from Capella University. Klein is currently the senior vice president of government and regulatory affairs for Strategic Education, Inc., where she works on higher education policy, postsecondary innovation and compliance on behalf of Capella University and Strayer University.Klein’s work experience includes associate director of financial aid at Capella University where her job was to oversee a financial aid staff of 65 people. Klein also has experience as an assistant director for financial aid at Concordia University and senior financial aid counselor at the University of St. Thomas. Klein is a nationally-recognized higher education and workforce thought leader with extensive professional experience and significant executive leadership accomplishments, especially related to postsecondary education access, workforce development and educational innovation. Klein lives in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, with her husband and two daughters.
Craig R. Lloyd is founder and board chairman of Lloyd Companies, a leading regional full-service development, real estate, construction, property management and hospitality company. Founded in 1972, Lloyd Companies has grown the Sioux Falls-based firm from one multi-family property to a portfolio of more than 6,000 apartment units and many of the region’s finest office and retail centers. With extensive knowledge of site selection and acquisition, land planning, government relations, real estate negotiations and financing, Lloyd has overseen development of more than 7,000 apartment units, two million square feet of commercial space and more than 700 acres of land for mixed-use development. Lloyd’s career also includes the development of corporate headquarters, state-of-the-art data centers and first-in-market retail developments for organizations such as Midcontinent Communications, Esurance, Meta Financial Group, Hilton Garden Inn, Home Depot, Fleet Farm, Menards and Century Theatres. Lloyd has a long list of professional accomplishments and distinctions, including his induction into the South Dakota Hall of Fame. He has been recognized as Outstanding Philanthropist from the Association of Fundraising Professionals – South Dakota Chapter, with the Spirit of Sioux Falls Leadership Award and the Distinguished Service Award from the USD Beacom School of Business. He is currently the president of the Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire. Lloyd is a licensed real estate broker in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota. He and his wife, Pat, reside in Sioux Falls.

About the Augustana Board of Trustees
The Augustana University Board of Trustees sets policy and manages the business and academic affairs of the university. The board selects and assesses the performance of the president and with the president, establishes, maintains and upholds the mission, core values and vision of the university. It is ultimately responsible for fiscal management and academic programming and ensures the well-being of the faculty, students and staff of the University.
Trustees serve on committees established by the board. They include Academic Affairs, Student Life, Financial Management, Institutional Resources (Advancement and Enrollment), as well as Governance and Nominating.
The Augustana University Board of Trustees are elected every December by delegates to the annual meeting of the Augustana University Association. They may serve up to four, three-year terms. Meetings of the board are typically held on campus in September, December and April. Trusteeship is an exciting, rewarding and demanding experience that requires time, commitment and intellectual energy.
