When is the 2021 Arthur Olsen Student Research Symposium?
This year's symposium will be held on Thursday, April 29 and Friday, April 30. Students will record their presentations which will then be uploaded to Moodle. During the symposium, students' presentations will become available to view at various times throughout the day and student presenters will participate in a live zoom session to answer viewer's questions shortly after their presentations go live.
When are proposals due?
The deadline for proposal submissions is Wednesday, March 24, 2021.
How do I submit a proposal?
Each proposal requires the sponsorship of a faculty member so, if you are interested in submitting a proposal, be sure you've first consulted your professor about presenting your work at the symposium. Then, decide on your presentation format--oral presentation (10-15 minutes) or a poster presentation (3-5 minutes). Make sure you have a title, an abstract (250 words or less), the names and emails of other student authors with whom you collaborated (and their preferred t-shirt size), and the name of your faculty sponsor. Once you have this information ready, you can fill out the online proposal submission form.
How will I present in an online symposium?
Students will create a video of their presentation that must be submitted by Friday, April 16, 2021. Videos will be uploaded to Moodle and will go live at 30 minute intervals during the symposium. In addition to creating a video, all presenters will participate in a 15 minute live zoom session, scheduled shortly after their video is live, to answer questions posed by viewers.
Students delivering oral presentations will be asked to create a 10-15 minute video that displays slides/visuals and includes narration.
Students delivering poster presentations will be asked to create a 3-5 minute video that displays their poster and includes narration.
How do I make my video?

How to turn your presentation into a video
*Microsoft Office 365 is available for students to use at no cost. You can find details on the my.augie portal. Go to the Augie Life tab and click on Help Desk-ITS (on the left side). There will be a link to Office 365 there.
- iMovie, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Final Cut Pro are all available in the Media Lab located in the Mikkelsen Library. Students can reserve a video editing station online or by contacting Media Services.
Tips to make a great video.
Here are some tips from Augustana's videographer.
- Have as crystal-clear audio as possible (no white noise or background chatter). Most smart phones and laptops will do just fine for this, so long as the environment itself is quiet. Consider reserving a library study room for taping.
- Make sure the presenter and their visual aid are front-lit with no bright lights in the background behind them.
- Have a digital image file of their visual aid to add in full-screen when editing the video. This allows viewers to more clearly read what the presenter is referring to.
