Master of Social Work

Why a Master of Social Work?

The Augustana University Master of Social Work (MSW), housed in the Sharon Lust School of Education, is part of the Harriet Emily Scott Social Work Program. The MSW program focuses on preparing clinical practitioners who link individuals, families and communities with systems that provide them with resources, services and opportunities they may previously not have been able to access.

  • The MSW program is offered in a hybrid format to serve working professionals in a variety of different fields or settings. Those who live outside a 50-mile radius of campus can complete the program online.

  • Students who have earned a BSW from an accredited program will be able to enter the MSW program with Advanced Standing, which means they can complete the program in one year (30 credit hours). Students who have earned bachelor's degrees in other areas can complete the MSW program in two years (59 credit hours).

  • The MSW program curriculum prepares students to be advanced clinicians in an area of interest. AU offers three cognates for students to specialize in: integrated behavioral health, play therapy or addictions.
  • Students are provided real-world field practicum experience in preparation for their transition to the social work profession and clinical practice.

Circle of Courage Model

The Harriet Emily Scott Social Work Program at Augustana University is modeled on the Circle of Courage philosophical principles focusing on belonging, mastery, independence and generosity. The program is designed to enhance a student’s ability to promote positive social environments for client well-being by empowering individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities.

Certificate Program: Integrated Behavioral Health

Augustana also offers a stand-alone certificate program in integrated behavioral health — a 4-course curriculum available for those beyond the master’s degree level; those who are already social workers, but want to work in the health care setting.

After more than 15 years, Augustana University has decided to bring back its social work program within the Sharon Lust School of Education — naming it after the former Director of Augustana’s Social Work program and Assistant Professor Emerita of Social Work Dr. Harriet Emily (Johnson) Scott ‘59.

Courses & Organizations

The Augustana MSW Program is designed to provide students with an advanced clinical curriculum that focuses on a generalist/advanced social work practice encompassing engagement, assessment, intervention and evaluation with individuals, families and groups. This approach is reflected by the structure of the program’s practice courses, which consist of multiple courses that cover the span of clinical practice in micro and mezzo level interventions. In the MSW program students incorporate social justice throughout their practice by critically examining oppressive and discriminatory social constructs, policies, practices, attitudes and assumptions.

Social work students may participate in:

  • The Social Work Association of Augustana University (SWAAU)
  • Phi Alpha Honor Society
